1000s stung in police seatbelt, phone operation

Police say basic road rules are still not being heeded by drivers after a national campaign targeting seatbelt shirkers and cellphone-using drivers.

Operation Habit, which ran for a fortnight from July 25, netted 2727 drivers who weren't restrained and another 1162 for using their cellphones while driving.

National Road Policing Manager Superintendent Steve Greally says the number of tickets issued is disappointing.

"It takes two seconds to put on a seatbelt and that simple thing can save your life," Supt Greally says.

Fifty people killed in crashes on New Zealand roads from January to July this year weren't wearing seatbelts.
