The New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) has carried out a controlled explosion of a military artillery shell found a few days ago in the Otago Harbour.
A person responsible for the dredging of the shipping channel near the harbour rang police when the shell was discovered, who in turn notified the NZDF.
After discussions between police and NZDF, it was deemed that the shell should be destroyed.
It is believed to be more than a century old, and was possibly used in coastal defences, police say.
