A 20-year-old Latvian man has been sentenced to six years in prison for importing and possessing $1.1 milllion of methamphetamine in baby carriers.

Arturs Stasevskis arrived in New Zealand in March from Dubai and was stopped at Auckland International Airport.

Customs officers found 1.1kg of meth hidden within tie boxes and seven baby carriers.

It was found Stasevskis had been given the drugs in Latvia's capital, Riga, and agreed to smuggle them into New Zealand where it would be collected and the man would be paid.

Customs investigations manager Maurice O'Brien says the case is a classic example of an offender who got greedy and acted as a drug mule.

"Criminals syndicates don't care about what happens to these drug couriers. These offenders pay the price for their greed, as shown in today's sentencing."

They say it's a great result because the drugs never reached the streets.
