A long boarder, English tramper and an elderly man all needed to be rescued by helicopter from Tongariro National Park yesterday.

The Greenlea rescue helicopter was kept busy yesterday afternoon with the three callouts.

The first, at around 12:30pm, was a 20-year-old long boarder who broke both legs below the knees after hitting a crash barrier whilst long boarding down Bruce Rd.

An English tramper on the Tongiriro Crossing fell at Red Crater and broke her arm around the same time. While the long boarder was attended to, the rescue helicopter went back to the crossing to pick up the tramper, before they were both taken together to Waikato Hospital.

Following this, an 81-year-old man who was staying in a ski hut further up the mountain, suffered a medical event and had to be transported to Rotorua Hospital.
