A man has handed himself into police after an alleged hit-and-run in South Auckland this morning which left a 4-year-old boy seriously injured.

It is understood the toddler stepped out of a taxi and walked onto Bairds Rd, in Otara, before being hit.

The child was taken to Auckland’s Middlemore Hospital and is believed to be in a stable condition.

Police say the man is assisting with inquiries into the incident.

It is understood the car involved in the crash was travelling at high speeds and fled the scene.

A resident told 3 News that cars often sped down the suburban road.

Police used their Eagle helicopter to search for the fleeing car.
