A medium-sized tremor has been felt across the Hawke's Bay, Wairarapa and Manawatu.
GNS confirmed the quake measured 5.2 on the Richter scale, and struck at 10:48am. It occurred at a depth of 15km, and was located 90km south of Hastings.
There had been an earlier 3.6 magnitude quake at 10:03am that was centred 30km east of Waipawa, in central Hawke's Bay.
Gareth Licshner from More FM in Hastings says the latest quake was much stronger - but initial reports suggested it was not destructive.
"Just a very slight, gentle rocking for a few seconds," @OwenVickers wrote on Twitter. "Just a quick shake here in HB. Nothing to be nervous about," wrote @thrashcardiom.
Civil Defence later said no damage or injuries have been reported. No tsunami warning was issued.
