$5.3M charge after auditing dispute

The Auditor General will pay more than $5.3 million to Kaipara District Council to settle disputes over its audits of a controversial wastewater scheme.

A $28 million blowout in a wastewater facility in Mangawhai sparked a residents revolt when the council tried to hike rates to pay for it.

The council was replaced by commissioners, who then claimed the Auditor General's poor reports contributed to its bad decisions.

The legal action cost about $1 million, and the rest of the settlement will be used to repay debt.
