As Kiwis get ready to head away over the long weekend, road safety campaigners are reminding motorists to wear seatbelts.

In the first nine months of this year close to 70 people not wearing seatbelts have died.

AA spokesperson Simon Douglas says these deaths could have been prevented.

"It's one of the simplest things you can do. It's one of the oldest messages in road safety - buckle up.

"What we see sometimes is multiple people in a car where there's been an accident. Those who have buckled up have been much more protected, those who haven't are getting killed or seriously injured."

Over Labour weekend last year, five people died on the roads.
