A group of academics, lawyers and economists has handed a petition to Parliament asking the Government to take climate change more seriously.
They represent an organisation called Wise Response, which is urging the Government to think about the impact climate change could have on the environment, the economy and the nation's wellbeing.
The group includes Otago University Emeritus Professor Sir Alan Mark, physicist Professor Bob Lloyd, economist Dr Geoff Bertram and the former vice-chancellor of Waikato University Dr Bryan Gould.
Green Party MP Kennedy Graham accepted the petition on the steps of parliament.
He says there are more than 100 high profile New Zealanders in the group.
"The petition comes just days after the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released its report into the likely impacts of climate change in New Zealand," he said.
"The IPCC report was a massive wake-up call, so it's great that we have this prominent group of New Zealanders calling on the Government to take the scientists' warnings seriously."
The petition will be sent to a select committee, which will consider it and decide whether the Government should respond to it.
