Airman denies theft of NZDF gun parts

 A Royal New Zealand Air Force airman has pleaded not guilty to stealing gun parts from the Defence Force.

Murray John Smith, 58, appeared in the Blenheim District Court this morning.

He was charged last month with stealing automatic pistol parts worth in excess of $2000 from the New Zealand Defence Force, and unlawfully possessing an automatic pistol barrels and slides.

The theft charge carries a maximum penalty of seven years imprisonment and the unlawful possession charge carries a maximum sentence of three years in jail, or fine of $4000.

Smith was remanded on bail until his next appearance in May.

The Defence Force has been approached for comment.
