Heavy fog caused disruptions to flights at Auckland Airport and ferry services in the Auckland Harbour this morning.

The fog was especially bad in southern and western suburbs of the city.

Fog restrictions were put in place at Auckland Airport shortly before 3am today and lifted at 6:38am, the Airport Operations Centre said, but disruptions continue.

Around 19 domestic regional flights have been cancelled and 13 delayed. One flight to Wellington was also delayed, although no international flights or Christchurch, Dunedin and Queenstown routes were affected.

Passengers are being urged to check the airport's website for flight information.

Auckland Transport says the 7:20am ferry service from Pine Harbour has been replaced by a bus, while the 8am service from Auckland has been cancelled.

The difficult conditions follow torrential downpours in parts of the city yesterday, which saw motorists rescued from cars and homes and schools flooded.
