Two people had to be rescued from a car trapped in a river in Hutt Valley tonight, and police believe alcohol was involved in the incident.

Emergency services, including the Lower Hutt and Upper Hutt Civil Defence rescue teams, arrived at the scene at around 9pm on Wednesday night.

After their car became trapped in the river under Totara Park Bridge, the pair climbed onto the roof of the vehicle before they were rescued.

Police say they're disappointed by the "poor judgement" the pair showed by attempting to drive in the water in poor conditions.

"Once safely ashore, it appeared alcohol may have been a factor in the incident," a police spokesperson says.

Police are talking to the pair about the incident.
