Police and ambulance crews are at Tongariro National Park where a hunter is believed to have shot himself.
Few details are available about what's happened, although the man, aged in his mid-20s, has survived what police are describing as a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
A St John spokesperson says ambulance crews were alerted to the incident at 1:25pm. An ambulance and a rescue helicopter with a paramedic on board were sent to the incident from Taupo.
The man was in a remote location of the park, police say. He has been flown to Waikato Hospital with moderate injuries.
