An ambulance has been knocked onto its side by a speeding vehicle in the Auckland suburb of Royal Oak.

One person had to be extracted by fire service personnel from the car, believed to be unhurt, in the Tuesday morning accident.

Police spotted a car travelling through Mt Roskill at high speed before it collided with the emergency vehicle on the corner of Hillsborough Rd and Mt Albert Rd. The ambulance rolled over.

"At five past four this morning we received a call that an ambulance had been involved in a motor vehicle accident," says fire service shift manager Steve Smith.

The ambulance's occupants were unhurt.

Police will conduct a scene examination this morning. Mt Albert Rd from Hillsborough Road through to Buckley Road is expected to be closed until 7am.
