Hastings Police are appealing for new information after two people threatened a store clerk with a knife before fleeing with tobacco and cash.

The offenders entered Discount Specialist Tobacco on the corner of Charles St and Eastbourne St West at about 9:15am on Friday.

As well as taking off with money and cigarettes, the offenders also stole a set of keys, which they used to steal the shop assistant's white Toyota Hilux.

The vehicle was found by police near the Hawke's Bay Showgrounds not long after the incident occurred.

Police say the store clerk is "understandably shaken" despite being uninjured, and they are working with the person as investigations continue.

They've urged people to report any suspicious activity they may have spotted near the store or by the Hawke's Bay Showgrounds, where the Hilux was abandoned.

Those with information are asked to call Detective Amy Bryant on (06) 873 0500 or to anonymously contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
