Two Christchurch restaurant owners have been fined for receiving and selling more than $11,000 of black market seafood.

Peter Wah and Qui Ying were caught up in a police sting operation which saw them buy and redistribute seafood from un-licenced dealers, something they both admitted to.

Wah has been sentenced to three months' community detention and fined $8000.

Ying received four months' community detention and a $12,000 fine because he profited off the illegal transactions.

The Ministry of Primary Industries is reminding restaurateurs of their obligations around seafood. Under New Zealand law seafood can only be traded by a licensed dealer.
