Retired Australian judge Ian Callinan AC QC has been chosen to consider whether David Bain is innocent on the balance of probabilities.
Justice Minister Amy Adams announced last month a fresh look at the case for compensation would get underway following the Government's dismissal of a report by retired Canadian Supreme Court judge Ian Binnie in 2011.
But who is Mr Callinan?
- Admitted as a solicitor of the Queensland Supreme Court in 1960 and a barrister in 1965;
- Appointed Queen's Counsel in 1978;
- President of the Queensland Bad Association between 1984-1987;
- President of the Australian Bar Association between 1984 -1985;
- Appointed to the High Court of Australia in 1998, retired in 2007;
- Since retiring undertook the Queensland Crime and Misconduct Commission, report to the Victorian Minister of Corrections and Crime Prevention on the state's parole system;
- Made Companion of the Order of Australia in 2003 for services to law, arts and the community;
- Became an ad hoc judge of the International Court of Justice
- Recommended for Bain review by Murray Gleeson, former Chief Justice of the High Court of Australia.
