An Auckland vet clinic has been inundated with offers to rehome and help a cat after it was ejected from a moving car's window.

The tom is recovering well after the incident on Tuesday afternoon, when a member of the public saw the cat fly out of a blue Suzuki Swift-type hatchback vehicle as it crossed the Pakuranga Bridge.

The grey-brown tabby was picked up and taken to the Greenlane Vet Centre and Cattery.

It is not clear if the cat was pushed, thrown or jumped willingly from the open window.

Senior vet Nicole Robertson says the wounds on his face are superficial, but he did receive significant ligament damage in his right leg caused by the incident which may need surgery.

Photos of the cat were posted to Facebook following the incident looking to find the "much-loved" cat's owner. The public have been quick to offer a home, but Dr Robertson says the owners will have a week to claim the cat before any offers are investigated.

The neutered tabby, thought to be between four and eight years old, is not microchipped.

However, Dr Robertson believes his friendly nature means he likely had been very well looked after.

"He's not afraid of humans, he's obviously been well loved by somebody."

And the charity toward the cat has extended further than just on Facebook, with clinic staff offering their own time and looking at organising an orthopaedic specialist for a procedure outside of normal hours.

The SPCA has been informed about the incident.
