Four Auckland high school students are about to cross the ditch for a battle of the both the written and spoken word.

After taking out the Auckland crown, the South Auckland Poets Collective now have their sights set on Sydney school Bankstown.

For Pearl Muzarir, having a mum who's an English teacher means poetry is something she's grown up with and has developed a deep love for.

"Poetry was pretty much my life, and then I kind of found an outlet in school, spoken word specifically because you can pretty much say what you want and have no repercussions."

For the most part, the group centre their poetry along the topic of social injustice.

To qualify for the battle the Marist High School students had to get past 180 poets from 26 high schools across Auckland to take out the coveted crown of grand slam champs of Word - The Front Line.

The competition in Sydney will consist of three rounds, one individual poem, one group poem, and the biggest challenge of all - improv.

For now though, it's more a matter of raising the money to get to Sydney for the October competition, as they hope to be the next line of Kiwis to go one up over our Aussie rivals.

They are currently accepting donations on their Boosted page.
