Aucklanders have clocked up 81.2 million passenger trips in the past year on public transport, creating an increase of 8.1 percent, according to the Auckland Council.

Rail patronage has increased by just over 22 percent, totalling 15.1 million trips in the last 12 months, ahead of work on the City Rail Link.

Auckland Mayor Len Brown expects the 20 million patronage target set by the Government for the City Rail Link will be reached by the end of next year.

Mr Brown says there has been a 20 percent patronage increase on the Western train line service, and the Pukekohe line jumped 53 percent.

Bus services have also increased by 4.8 percent, and ferries by 10.5 percent.

Construction of the City Rail Link is expected to begin soon, with the resituating of stormwater pipes and the demolition of the Downtown Mall to be the first visible steps according to the Auckland Council.

Mr Brown says discussions with John Key, Bill English and Simon Bridges "were going well" and that the Government was committed to the City Rail Link.
