Aucklanders could experience a number of aftershocks in the coming days, after the region was rattled by two earthquakes yesterday.
The quakes, measuring 3.1 and 3.9 on the Richter scale, struck just after 4pm and were centred around Motutapu Island – the most recent Auckland volcano to erupt 600 years ago. The island is right alongside Rangitoto Island in the Hauraki Gulf.
GNS Science says the shakes were caused by fault lines, not by volcanic activity.
More than 9000 people reported they had felt the larger quake on the Geonet website.
The earthquakes were "tiny" on the scale of earthquakes, but they were "quite shallow and very close to populated centres, so they were felt very strongly around Auckland", GNS Science duty seismologist Caroline Holden said yesterday.
