The University of Auckland has confirmed it has bought the former Lion Breweries site in Newmarket.

A university spokesperson says securing the 5.2ha site is the next step in the 30-year development plan.

Last year, the university announced a proposal to purchase the site following a period of due diligence.

A mixed-use campus is being planned for the site and will include purpose-built teaching and research facilities and student accommodation and business development.

Work will begin on demolishing the old brewery soon after they take control of the site on May 31, the university says.

The first project will be a total refurbishment of some of the existing buildings to provide an engineering research space and also the construction of a new civil structures hall.

The work will be done in the lead up to a $200 million redevelopment of the Faculty of Engineering building in the university's city campus.

Lion Breweries - now Lion - occupied the site for about 150 years until they relocated to East Tamaki in October 2010.
