Some very lucky children have today road-tested a brand new $1 million playground at Takapuna Beach.

But this isn't just any old playground; it caters for all ages and abilities.

It's not often wheelchair-bound Johnny, 15, gets to jump on a trampoline or spin on a merry-go-round.

"It's one of the best inclusive playgrounds I've ever seen. It's just great seeing kids of all abilities joining in and doing stuff together," says occupational therapist Adrian McPherson.

And that's exactly what creators Chris and Jackie Reeve wanted. This playground was their idea, their dream and gift.

"There's a great need for unstructured play for our children, to get them away from their devices and bedrooms," says Mr Reeve.

They chipped in $500,000 to see it built, council contributed $100,000 and the rest was raised through donations. It took years of planning and hours of research.

"You know, putting grandkids in the car and driving them all over the place," says Ms Reeve.

"We ruled out a lot of equipment, if kids weren't playing on it, we weren't having it."

And by the looks of it their choices were spot on.

"The equipment is fully integrated and there's no sort of barriers for use. It's truly spectacular and I hope it's going to be a blueprint for the rest of the region and the country," says Devonport-Takapuna local board member Joseph Bergin.

This park nearly didn't happen. Some people in the community were concerned about building on the beach front, others were more worried about the amount of noise children make while playing, but in the end Council gave permission.

The park officially opens on Sunday.
