More trains for Auckland's Western line roll out today, but there are fears not enough emphasis is being put on future demand.
On weekdays there will now be trains every 10 minutes during peak times, so passengers will be able to turn up and go.
Jon Reeves from the Public Transport Users Association says passengers will now be able to just turn up and go.
"The benefit is if you do have a late-running train or, in an unusual case, an early-running train, it will mean that still people are going to find there will be a train service coming along shortly."
But Mr Reeves says there's still more work to be done.
"Once the CRL [Central Rail Link] is completed, the rail network is pretty much going to go ballistic," he says. "If they're not ordering new electric trains or additional electric rolling stock right now, we probably may be in a problem in the next few years."
In the 12 months to the end of March, train passenger numbers were up 19 percent.
Mr Reeves believes more people will start using the service.
"You can just walk to your local railway station and get on the next train and go without having to wonder if you have to wait half-an-hour or an hour. It's going to bring more confidence into the rail network for a greater number of people."
Commuters using the Pukekohe, Onehunga, Southern and Eastern lines are being told to check timetables as some trains will now depart earlier.
