A group of skiers in an out-of-bounds area near Wanaka's Treble Cone has triggered an avalanche in the Hidden Valley area.
The snowfall is up to half a metre deep in open terrain.
The four people involved were not caught in it and skied away safely.
The avalanche was estimated at a size two - the second smallest out of five, but powerful enough to potentially injure or kill a person.
Police and search and rescue crews are searching the area to ensure no one is trapped, but the area has been declared clear.
