Baby delivered side of road, police assist

A woman gave birth on the side of the road in east Auckland last night, and police helped to deliver the baby.

Constable James Collins was patrolling the area with another constable when a woman and her partner waved out to them as they were driving past.

Const Collins suggested driving her to the Botany birthing clinic which was a short distance away, but the woman said it was too late; the baby was coming.

Const Collins sent for his partner to bring a midwife to help her.

Meanwhile, while holding onto to a road sign, the woman proceeded to give birth.

"She was really good actually, obviously in a bit of stress, but handling it really well," says Const Collins.

He says she has another child, and knew what to do.

Before the midwife or ambulance could arrive, the father and Const Collins delivered the baby.

He says she gave a "nice big push" and warned the father not to drop the baby.
