Baby flown to hospital after fall

A newborn baby has been flown to Tauranga Hospital with serious head injuries.

The new mother fell asleep while holding the baby, and it rolled out of her arms onto its head.

The baby was stabilised before being driven by St John ambulance to Opotiki Airfield, and picked up the Trustpower TECT Rescue Helicopter at about 10pm on Wednesday night.

The baby's injuries weren't deemed serious enough for it to be taken to Starship Children's Hospital.

The pilot told Newshub the mother "seemed to be okay" on the flight. He wasn't sure what injuries the baby had sustained.

A police spokesperson said they have not been advised of the incident "as far as we're aware".

The flight was conducted using night vision goggles, according to the Philips Search & Rescue Trust.
