A Kaikoura teenager has risked his life to venture deep into unstable land near Kaikoura to see whether a baby seals' playground was damaged or not.

Jackson Lidgard, 18, took his father along for the journey that saw them climb up to Ohau waterfalls.

Mr Lidgard filmed the excursion that shows their journey throughout the area that has been untouched since the November 14 quakes.

He says the area isn't as bad as initially thought.

"It was pretty good actually," he says.

"It wasn't as damaged as I was expecting. The waterfall is absolutely fine."

Mr Lidgard, who works for Seal Swim Kaikoura, says they did have concerns for their safety with the on-going earthquakes but they were confident about going up there.

"I've been going up there for ten years or so, so it's pretty interesting to see what it was like."
