Backyard haunted house expects big crowds

An Auckland family who builds a haunted house for Halloween in their own backyard each year for people to view, expect more visitors this year than ever before.

It takes more than a month to source the materials from the United States and three weeks to build for one weekend of frights.

"It's something we've always wanted to do, just for the kids and the community," says homeowner Gail Shewan.

Each year this spooky spot seems to attract even more visitors than before. Last year there were so many people that Ms Shewan and her family had to get them to wait at the top of their driveway.

Ms Shewan says people offered them money for the spooky attraction, and this year the animal-loving family plans to give the proceeds to the SPCA.

The Shewans' haunted house will run from 5pm tonight, on Moore St, Hillcrest.
