It seems there's a new food fad to catch up on every week, so it's good to know that some things never change.

A new supermarket survey shows some trusty favourites are still at the top of Kiwis' supermarket shopping lists.

Over the past 12 months, supermarket chain Countdown has been tracking what you put into your trolley, and the number one item on most people's list is bananas.

"I do buy banana," says shopper Mahi Khade. "It's quite handy to have. If I'm running out of time I want to have something quick as breakfast, so I will eat banana."

"I buy bananas every few days because I make smoothies and I have them with breakfast," says Damian Archbold.

The top 10 pantry staples that follow closely behind bananas are tomatoes, broccoli, white bread, carrots, milk, avocado, cucumbers, onions and grapes. You'll be pleased to know that these popular items don't come at a huge cost.

Countdown's top 100 items have dropped by just over 2 percent in the past 12 months. That includes the top 10 items. What we are purchasing for our pantry is changing to healthier items that match global food trends.

All things coconut have been one of those trends. New Zealanders now spend millions every year on coconut water alone. But these aren't the only trends.

The days of the big weekly shop are over, with customers walking the aisles on average twice a week.

"I live right next door so I come most days," says Mr Archbold. "I use it as my fridge."

The most popular day to shop has moved from a Thursday to a Saturday, and online shopping is on the increase. Supermarkets say most customers can get their whole shop done in 10 minutes, which means less time queuing in line.
