Bandaged bandit sought in unsolved Auckland bank robberies

Police are looking for an "unusual" bandaged offender in their quest for new leads in two armed robberies at the same Auckland bank just months apart.

Avondale police have released CCTV footage of both robberies - on December 11 and April 12 - at the Westforce Credit Union on Great North Rd in an attempt to find the brazen robbers.

They believe the daylight robberies are linked, but their investigation so far has gone nowhere.

Detective Senior Sergeant Marcia Murray says the suspect in the December hold-up had a distinctive look.

"This is not your usual bank robber. He has plasters all over his face, his arm in a sling and sunglasses on. But while he looks comical, he has pulled a gun out of the sling and shown it to the teller, as a mother and her son are standing right next to him," she says.

He threw a red bag at the teller, who emptied the tills before the man left the building.

Around 2:20pm on April 12, a man wearing sunglasses, a hoodie and a bandana covering his face, entered the same bank holding a double-barrelled sawn-off shotgun and demanded money.

He then ran from the store and down a driveway to the next building.

Snr Sgt Murray says police need fresh leads , but still hope the public can help identify either offender.

"We believe they are linked and we strongly believe that the person(s) responsible will have told someone. This is a person who will have suddenly had a lot of money that he didn't have before, and family members or friends might have wondered why."
