Bars under scrutiny after central Auckland brawl

Police are talking to staff at central Auckland bars after a shocking brawl that was caught on camera.

Three men were hospitalised as a result of the violence.

The fight was one of several that broke out near Britomart in the CBD yesterday morning.

Inspector Ross Barnaby says police are piecing together the events of the night.

"We have had some people phone us and nominate from the video footage various names, and we're following up on that," he says.

Police are trying to identify what bars the culprits were drinking at beforehand, and Insp Barnaby says charges will be laid against any bar found to have illegally served alcohol to drunk people before the fight.

"What we are trying to establish, obviously, from our interviews is, can we identify a bar? And if they have come from a bar we will most certainly be talking to the licensee," he says.

"If we can show that a licensee is serving persons that are intoxicated, we will most definitely be prosecuting them."

Insp Barnaby is appealing for more cellphone footage of the fight and says the alcohol-fuelled bravado displayed in the incident is completely unacceptable.
