A group of Black Power gang members on motorcycles are at the centre of a crash that killed a man in north Auckland early on Friday afternoon.

Police want to talk to anyone who witnessed members of the biker gang riding in an erratic manner or overtaking on double yellow lines on State Highway 1 in Puhoi.

Senior Constable Karl Bevin, a Serious Crash Unit investigator, said two of the motorcyclists were on the wrong side of the road when they collided with a pair of cars travelling in the opposite direction.

A 54-year-old Taranaki man died from his injuries while another biker, a 50-year-old from south Auckland, remains at Auckland Hospital in a critical condition.

"We'd like to hear from anyone who witnessed the riders' driving behaviour before the collision or witnessed the crash," Senior Constable Bevin said.

The group of Black Power riders are thought to have been travelling to a tangi in Northland when the crash occurred.

Those with information on the incident are urged to contact Senior Constable Bevin on (09) 213 4628, or anonymously call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
