A man has been found dead in the Waikato River.

The man's body was discovered by water skiers south of the Horotiu Bridge about 9am on Sunday.

The water skiers helped recover the body.

Police say they are yet to formally identify the man, but believe he is a man who went missing in Hamilton about five days ago.

They say the body is not 70-year-old Kawhia man Trevor Smith, who has been missing for a week.

Police are treating the man's death as unexplained and a post-mortem examination will be carried out today.

They are appealing for anyone who may have seen a man near the Waikato River on March 19 to come forward.
