A body has been discovered by police in the Field Peak area of the Tararua Ranges, a day after a search was launched for missing tramper John Arthur.

The 67-year-old was headed for Kime Hut when he started his walk on Tuesday, and had planned to be back at his car at Otaki Forks by 3:30pm on Thursday, but hadn't been seen.

About 50 volunteers and police resumed the search for Mr Arthur earlier on Saturday, while four search volunteers remained in the bush overnight looking for him.

An Air Force helicopter and crew were brought in to assist in the search.

Search and Rescue Coordinator Sergeant Andy Brooke said it had been a sad day for search parties.

"Our thoughts are with the victim's family and friends at this time," he said.

Police say they will confirm the victim's name when the family has been notified.

Inquiries into the death will continue in the coming days.
