A champion bodybuilder has been remanded on bail after appearing in Christchurch District Court on nearly 300 charges relating to performance and appearance enhancing drugs.

Phillip James Musson, 44, is charged with selling medicines that did not have consents, along with hundreds more charges relating to the sale of anabolic steroids.

Court documents allege the professional personal trainer was selling his own brand of performance and image enhancing products, made at home and packaged up in pills and vials.

Working with the Ministry of Health, police prosecutors are hoping to gain a conviction under the Medicines Act 1981, which could potentially lead to a jail term.

Musson has been under investigation for some time. A police search of his suburban Christchurch home earlier in the year revealed cash, large amounts of raw materials and manufactured medicine, the New Zealand Herald has reported.

Musson was named Mr Christchurch physique in 2009 and Mr New Zealand Athletic in 2005.

He will reappear before a Marae court on February 8.
