Two Auckland cafés have made an absolute dog's breakfast of their latest publicity stunt, which will see green-lipped mussels and free-range meat being fed to mutts.

For four weekends, the Kohi Beach and Takapuna Beach Cafés will feature a special canine menu allowing patrons to indulge their four-legged friends with a healthy treat.

'Bone Appetit' is a collaboration between café consortium the Hipgroup and natural New Zealand dog food company K9 Natural.

"People get to pop in, we'll have a degustation dine-in menu available, or for those dogs on the run, they can take a doggy bag away," says Jo O'Sullivan of K9 Natural.

"This is a really good opportunity for us to get people thinking about what they feed their dogs in general and making healthy choices, like they make healthy choices for themselves."

Aucklanders are often a bit batty about their posh pets and many Kiwis may smirk at the fancy foods the hounds will be gobbling down.

The free Bone Appetit menu will feature K9 Natural's Beef Feast, Lamb Feast and Lamb Green Tripe Toppers which use quality ingredients such as free range meat, green lipped mussels and eggs from cage free hens, all sourced from and made in New Zealand.

"It's all a bit of fun. Sometimes you've got to throw a dog a bone as they put a smile on our faces every day of the week. Just like you and me, they deserve a treat from time to time," says Andrew Brown of the Hipgroup.

"I've heard those cat cafés have gone off in England and other places around the world, so who knows - this might be the next big thing in Auckland."
