The 41-year old man who threw an ice cream container full of brown sludge at Gerry Brownlee at yesterday's Earthquake Memorial service lost a son in the February quake.

John Howland travelled to Christchurch for the service and to remember his 14-year-old son, Jayden, who was killed in the quake.

Howland and his wife, Helen, travelled from Greymouth yesterday to attend the earthquake memorial service.

Jayden Andrews Howland was killed when the bus he was riding home was struck by falling masonry on Colombo St.

Howland said, "We lost our son in [the quake]. It was his birthday. Today he would have been 20."

But as the service came to an end, Howland threw a mixture of flour eggs, vinegar and cocoa over Earthquake Recovery Minister Gerry Brownlee.

Today he pleaded guilty in the Christchurch District Court to a charge of assault. Before his appearance in court, Howland told Newshub he stands by his actions.

"[I did it] to prove a point -- the Government sucks… simple."

Howland has been remanded for sentencing on March 15.
