A Wellington auction house is short a few items for its weekly auction today after a burglary last night.

Ironically the items stolen from Central Markets in Lower Hutt were supplied by Wellington police for disposal, and were likely recovered stolen goods.

Owner Alan Fisher says it could've been a lot worse because they had about $2,000 worth of gold jewellery and phones in the cabinets that they usually put in the safe at night.

"I forgot last night but remembered when I was at home having my tea. I almost didn't come back but I knew it would prey on my mind at night so I drove all the way back to work [and] removed the high value stuff."

It's the first time the auction house has been broken into and the burglary has been reported to police.

The stolen items included a bag of purses and wallets, a bag of cheap watches, an iPod touch and some headphones.

"They'll probably end up back here at some point," says Mr Fisher.
