Police in Hawke's Bay suburb Flaxmere have warned the community's senior citizens to be vigilant of threatening visitors.

The caution comes after a 15-year-old youth and a 50-year-old woman were caught preying on elderly people in council housing.

The teenager is facing charges of demanding with menace and burglary, while the woman has been banned from entering Hastings District Council housing property.

Sergeant Greg Macklow says police won't tolerate such "despicable" offending against some of the most "vulnerable members of the community".

He asks that the Flaxmere locals look out for the vulnerable residents in the area.

"We urge people to keep an eye out for their elderly neighbours, as the more isolated people are, the more vulnerable they become to these predatory offenders," Sgt Macklow said.

Police urge residents who spot suspicious behaviour to contact police or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
