Christchurch's troubled Burwood Birthing Unit has temporarily reopened after asbestos test results came back clear today.

Staff were given the go-ahead to move back in this afternoon and the unit is now accepting women for birthing and post-natal care again.

The unit was temporarily closed after the February 14 earthquake this year. It will remain open until June 30, when it will be permanently closed and demolished at a later unconfirmed date.

Last month a protest to keep the unit in the city's east was organised, and a petition started, which has more than 3000 signatures.

The Canterbury District Health Board says it's committed to providing the right primary maternity services for the community and will continue to work closely with all key stakeholders to find a way forward for future maternity services in Christchurch.
