Calls for free travel after problem-plagued week in rail

The Public Transport Users' Association (PTUA) is supporting calls for Auckland Transport to provide a 'travel free day' to repay train commuters for problems they have endured over the last week.

PTUA spokesperson Jon Reeves says the Auckland train network is plagued with maintenance issues and commuters should be repatriated.

Last week saw three problems on the city's train lines within eight days.

An early morning track fault saw cancellations and delays on Friday and the network also suffered two straight days of delays, after a train broke down.

Mr Reeves blames a lack of government investment in KiwiRail for the problems.

"There will be ongoing issues as long as the Government put's its priorities in the wrong area, which is putting it all into roading and spending very little on KiwiRail."

He believes there is widespread support for more investment in train services but says the Government appears oblivious.

"They haven't really quite noticed that there is actually a huge upswing of rail passengers now, that there never used to be, so I think voters will want to see investment into the rail network itself."

Auckland Transport and the Minister for Transport Simon Bridges were not immediately available for comment.
