One of New Zealand’s most controversial bloggers has just been appointed as the editor of one of New Zealand’s most controversial newspapers.
Whale Oil blogger Cameron Slater will take over the helm of Truth, a once-popular newspaper that peaked in the 1950s, but has since suffered a serious decline in circulation.
Slater is tasked with “fundamentally changing” the way the paper is consumed and will build a business model that works - one he says will deliver “real views”.
“Most of the media in this country is weak, and it’s paid for. The integrity in news went ages ago,” he says.
In a statement on its website this afternoon, Truth said Slater was "in the chair, as of today, kicking arse and sticking up for the little guy".
Slater founded Whale Oil and claims to be New Zealand’s number one news and opinion blogger.
In 2010, he was convicted of breaching suppression orders on eight occasions, including naming the victim in a sex case, and was fined nearly $7000.
It was also revealed earlier this year during a case in the Auckland District Court that he had an extra-marital affair with Auckland woman Debbie Brown.
Slater replaces outgoing editor Joseph Lose and his first edition will be out at the end of next week.
