The threat of rain hasn't stopped the Canterbury A&P Show from getting underway this morning.

It's the 153rd instalment of the show, which runs over three days. Show-goers will be treated to gourmet wine and food, carnival rides and livestock and equestrian competitions.

MetService predicts the rain will clear this afternoon with a high of 15degC.

Over 100,000 people are expected to attend the show.

From the woolly to the weird, around 3000 animals will compete in more than 1700 classes. There is over $100,000 in prize money up for grabs for titles such as best in show.

Children have the chance to get up close and personal with baby animals in the petting area that has doubled in size for this year's show.

The show is open from 8am - 5:30pm from today till Friday. Ticket prices are $22 for adults and $8 for children aged 5-12.

It is held at ASB Agricultural Park, between the suburbs of Wigram and Hilmorton.
