Emergency services have rescued a man dangling 100 metres down a cliff face in his vehicle in Piha.

Fire services were working on securing and retrieving the vehicle, while ambulance officers brought the man up the cliff to safety.

He had earlier told desperate emergency services he was on the side of a cliff somewhere in Auckland, but could only specify that he was between Blockhouse Bay and Piha. The two places are 30km away from each other.

The man is believed to have been travelling so fast when he careened off Piha Rd that he cleared trees on the roadside.

Northern fire communications said he was trying to piece together where he was using Google Maps but was struggling to get data.

The man was sounding his horn as he heard emergency services get closer, to help them identify his whereabouts.

He remained in the vehicle and on the phone to police while he remained unfound, but cellphone coverage was poor from his position.

Emergency services began their search at Scenic Dr and travelled towards Piha in an effort to find the vehicle.
