Car driven into Whanganui River

The occupants of a car which plunged into the Whanganui River have managed to escape with the help of bystanders.

The Fire Service and police were called to the scene on Anzac Pde near the Dublin St bridge just before 11am.

A police communications spokesperson says the car was "in the drink", and members of the public were quick to help those inside.

However, it is not known how many people were in the car or whether any were injured. It is not believed to be a fatal accident.

Police have just arrived on the scene, and the car is "sinking fast".

Police will possibly be left to retrieve the vehicle, though it could be left for the insurance company, the spokesperson says.

It is unclear how the incident happened.
