A rental vehicle that drove off a section of State Highway 6 between Greymouth and Westport has been saved from falling off a cliff on the South Island's west coast.

Police say the vehicle, which had three people in it before they were rescued, travelled a short distance down the cliff south of Charleston.

The Fire Service says its not sure how high or steep the enbankment it fell down was, but say the car was about 3m below the road.

The car's occupants are believed to be tourists, and all three of them suffered minor injuries in the incident, police say.

The car was stabilised by emergency services and a tow truck was sent to get it to safety.
