It's one thing for a car to do burnouts on a golf course - but quite another when it literally burns out in the middle of the fairway.

But that's exactly what employees of Dunedin's Chisholm Links Golf Club stumbled across when they arrived at work on Sunday morning.

The shell of a four-door sedan was photographed atop a pile of ash at a site on the course's 17th hole, and shared on Facebook this morning.

"They came through, drove over one of the greens - luckily they didn't do any damage to the green - and left it in the middle of the fairway of the 17th hole," said an employee working at the club's golf shop.

The employee said he suspected alcohol contributed to the incident.

The vehicle is believed to have driven through the adjacent Pirates Rugby Club fields on Saturday night or in the early hours of Sunday morning.
