The transitional cardboard cathedral in Christchurch has been damaged by recent rain, but church officials are brushing off claims that it has been left soggy.

The heavy duty tubes were drenched during a downpour three weeks ago, leaving small parts warped and discoloured.

But Anglican Church spokesperson Jason Rhodes says the damage was always expected and is an easy fix.

"It was always known from the very beginning that there would be some rain that would hit the cardboard in some way shape or form," he says.

"It will just be pulled out and replaced, you can pull the portions out of the tubes."

The soggy cardboard, which can be seen on four or five tubes, won't affect the structure of the building as the columns are just for show on top of a wooden frame.

"It's not as if the cathedral's damp or leaking," Mr Rhodes says. "You replace that part of tube, they were ready to do that and it hasn't changed the outcomes or anything."

Construction work on the transitional cathedral is due to finish some time this month. Church officials will then fit out the inside, with an official opening date expected some time in early August.
