Carmel Sepuloni's mother due in court

Labour MP Carmel Sepuloni has quit her social development portfolio after revelations her mother's facing 19 welfare fraud charges.

Beverley-Anne Sepuloni is expected to appear in New Plymouth District Court today, accused of claiming numerous allowances she was not entitled to.

Labour leader Andrew Little says his MP had no knowledge of the ordeal.

"While she has a close family member who is in this situation, there is a conflict of interest for her in the social development role," he says.

"Regardless of the outcome, when it is finished she will be reinstated to the social development portfolio."

Carmel Sepuloni will remain on the front bench and as the party's junior whip.
